Speaker: Melissa Irwin, SPHR-CA
Details: Melissa Irwin, a nationally certified Senior Professional in Human Resources with a CA designation, has trained over thousands of supervisors, managers and executives in basic and complex employment skills and techniques and is versatile in her presentation and facilitation techniques. She is equally comfortable discussing employment regulations as well as communication and leadership techniques.
The Santa Cruz EAC is pleased to welcome her back, as she has facilitated several of ours and other EAC programs. Melissa has a generalist's perspective of Human Resource Management and works with business owners and managers offering a broad spectrum of consulting services: from the auditing of current and desired practices, to the identification of areas of exposure and opportunity, to the development, implementation and ongoing support of sound employment policies and practices.
Whether creating employment policies, conducting training or providing one-on-one consulting, she takes pride in simplifying employment issues for business managers who may lack the time, desire or expertise to address and resolve human resource issues on their own. For the past thirteen years, she has been an HR Consultant with TPO Human Resource Management, a HR consulting firm serving the Monterey Bay Area.
Every day managers are faced with having to "investigate" facts and make decisions, and occasionally, they must also "investigate" matters of very serious concern and consequence. This program will focus on practical tips and techniques to take back to the workplace and apply to common-and not so common-situations.

Details: With increasing scrutiny of employer practices and procedures by governmental regulatory agencies, labor unions and plaintiffs’ lawyers, it is critical for employers to create effective and legally compliant handbooks. In this presentation, Mr. Schachter will identify best practices to create and evaluate your handbooks, and how to minimize your legal exposure. Emphasis will be placed on practical techniques, with sample policies, in critical employment areas to assure legal compliance, improve employee moral and make a positive statement about your workplace.
Returning by popular demand, Victor Schachter is a partner at Fenwick & West LLP. He is Chair of the firm’s Employment Practices Group, where he represents employers exclusively in employment law and labor relations, privacy, trade secrets, unfair competition, and related litigation. He is a nationally recognized speaker who has been featured on numerous national and local television radio programs.
